Advanced Multiplexing: The Latest of Prevost Smarter Solutions
Sainte-Claire, Quebec, February 23, 2005 - Prevost H-Series coaches delivered after February 9, 2005 come with the industry’s most advanced and user-friendly multiplexing technology. This Prevost advanced multiplexing system has been developed in conjunction with our parent company, Volvo Bus Corporation, a world-leading coach and transit bus manufacturing conglomerate.
Tested technology
Nearly five years of research and testing enabled this innovative multiplexing system to seamlessly fit the Prevost H-Series production. Testing included modules’ operation under temperatures ranging between -40
o F and 158o F. The final test involved four Prevost H-Series coaches in line-haul operation between 130 and 188 days, and covering a total of 170,000 miles. This last confirmation test allowed engineers to fine-tune the system, so it performs optimally as designed.Advanced technology allowing specific programming for each coach
The multiplexing system developed by the Prevost-Volvo tandem is indeed advanced technology. For instance, the Vehicle Program Generator selects vehicle options and generates the programming software specific to each H-Series coach. The benefit is that each coach has its own Master ID Module and software back-up onboard. Once the Master ID module is programmed and installed on the coach, it will program all network electronic modules the minute they are mounted. It’s all done automatically without any additional programming tools. Moreover, any updating of the Master ID module can be performed on-the-fly by field technicians or by the operator’s technicians.
Interchangeable self-programming electronic modules
Because the essence of multiplexing is both to simplify control and diagnosis and to reduce wiring, splices and terminals, Prevost has gone one step further to optimize simplicity by using self-programming interchangeable modules. Compared with the traditional electrical system previously used on Prevost H-Series, the new system uses 1/3 less wiring, splices and terminals.
In-dash textual diagnostic read-outs
The H-Series advanced multiplexing system makes trouble-shooting much easier, accurate and faster. The keypad on the dashboard provides mode selection and access to textual diagnostic read-outs, eliminating the need to use plug-in diagnostic modules or to refer to a code book for faulty condition identifications or operational status confirmations. The system test mode also speeds-up pre-trip inspection of exterior lights and checks the working condition of all vital components.
Prevost’s system links all major coach components through 16 modules controlling such functions as entrance door, kneeling/low buoy, tag axle, HVAC system, exterior and interior lighting, wipers, telltale lights, engine starting, electric horn, fire alarm, toilet fan, radiator fan clutch, pre-heater, emergency egress windows sensors, baggage door ajar sensors, wheelchair lift and battery charging system. In this last instance, when ignition is off, the multiplex system will automatically cancel some electrical functions to prevent battery discharge.
Dual modes to allow stand-alone operation
Like duplicate systems on most airplanes, the Prevost multiplex provides fail-safe stand-alone operating modes on vital components. In the unlikely event that a module is unable to communicate through the network, it can go into stand-alone mode and continue operating.
Prevost’s advanced multiplexing system is another fine demonstration of smarter solutions to optimize operational efficiency. By speeding-up accurate diagnostics and facilitating repairs, the advanced multiplexing system increases reliability and reduces downtime.
